Catalog Pick: Purple and Pink Mirrors from Horchow

IMO, Horchow is for sure and for certain one of the best places to get beautiful mirrors online. Some are more budget-friendly than others but the site also runs a number of sales so there is a good possibility even the priciest mirror can be bought at a discount.

I was perusing the mirror selection once again and two FANTASTIC options caught my eye. Hello aubergine, plum delightful Moroccan situation:

That one is the Patrice Scalloped Mirror and I want it something fierce. And check out this feminine beauty:

That one is the Rosemeade Mirror. Are you most delighted by the blush pink, the gold edging, or the scalloped silhouette?

These are the kinds of pieces that can really make a space feel special...yes, we all use mirrors but a purple or pink mirror? Now that is an unexpected place for those colors. Love.

New from Megan Young

I love checking a favorite designer's website and finding new photos in their portfolio. Just did a little sweep of Megan Young's (such a talent!) and found some pretty images where she is really working the jewel tones:

All photos via meganyoungdesigns.com

Love the tones of berry aubergine with chartreuse. It takes a very trusting client to say yes to a "purple" couch but I think the result in that second picture is stunning. Feels incredibly fresh, yet traditional so the colors are not overpowering. A great balance.

Check out more of Megan Young's work here...

Friday Crush

I've noted that I'm pretty equal-opportunity when it comes to design - I can find something I like in every style. But I have to say that "industrial" is usually not one of them. I can do modern but I tend to struggle with industrial (they are similar, yes? no?). The above photo is part of a collection of industrial interiors that I found online and although I can see the "industrialness" of it, I also think it's wicked awesome in a modern way. I love when a designer is really able to turn the structure of the room into the design. And that floor is ridiculous. Juxtaposed with so much white and what is clearly an amazing outdoor view. Wouldn't want it for my home but would love to spend a weekend here...especially if the final layer of furnishings offered lots of contrasting textures like linen and fur.

I turned 33 this week. Happy to count another year of life and I must say the 30s have been excellent. Thanks to all who made it a special week. Hope you have a wonderful weekend...see you next week!

Getting Straight Paint Lines

A recent Pinterest jaunt led me to a clever DIY done by a mom and her tween daughter:

Essentially, painter's tape was put on the wall at random, varying angles and each geometric shape was painted a snazzy color to create a cool, colorful wall. Easy little project that had a fun impact for a tween bedroom.

But what caught my eye most was the product they were using, as it's new to me but I would have loved something like it when painting my own dining room's stripes - FrogTape now has a sealer that you can use as a second step after applying your tape.

Especially helpful if your walls have some slight texture to them which can cause messy paint lines.

My old technique would be to paint the base color, apply my tape, go over the seams with the base color to "seal" it, and then paint my stripe/line/shape color. That did not work so great, but it did help.

This doesn't cut out any work but if it achieves a sharper result, it's totally worth checking out. And no, the FrogTape people haven't reached out to me. This one just made sense, especially since I can guess that almost all of us will encounter a painting DIY at some point where this might be useful - I don't have anything on my radar but I'll remember this tidbit next time I do.

Have you used it? Good or bad results?

Shuffler Lowcountry Boil

Every year, right around my birthday, we host what we like to think of as our signature event as a family - the Shuffler Lowcountry Boil. It's always mid-late October so the weather is usually perfect for being out the in the backyard with great food, drinks, a fire pit, family and friends.

This year we marked our 6th Lowcountry Boil and my friend Crystal brought her camera! And when Crystal has her camera there are delightful results so I have some fun pictures to share of this year's event.

The spread of goodies and disposable tableware:

The cook (Carter does all the cooking! It's great!):

The main event - shrimp, potatoes, sausage and corn boiled up with some Old Bay and served with cornbread and cocktail sauce:

My friend Lauren has a bounce house. And Ana Claire can't get enough of it:

More Ana Claire, in her smocked scarecrow suit:

Lots of adorable children:

And, finally, Paige (Crystal's daughter) and Ana Claire eating cupcakes:

These little nuggets have known each other since Day 1:

They were born one week apart. I can't take the cuteness.

A hearty thanks to Carter who pulls the majority of this event off! This year was one of the best yet...hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Friday Crush

Can't. Stop. Staring.

This stunning work of art completely captured me this week. It's by Linda Elksnin of the Charleston Artist Collective and called Girl in Black and White Hat. I really, really, really love the bold colors punctuated with the black and white of her hat. And something about the composition of the pretty lady in the foreground of that backdrop seems so balanced...does that make sense to anyone else or just me? LOVE.

We're hosting a backyard shindig this weekend to celebrate Fall and the weather is supposed to be gorgeous! Really looking forward to it and hope you have some fun seasonal plans. Enjoy your weekend and see you next week!

Linens: For Every Room and Occasion & Meeting Jane Scott

Let me go ahead and assuage your anxiety over what to get your mom/best friend/mother-in-law/manicurist/sister/person-with-good-taste-in-your-life/yourself for Christmas...get them the book Linens: For Every Room and Occasion by Jane Scott Hodges, owner/founder of Leontine Linens.

Y'all, it does NOT disappoint.

Image from Linens: For Every Room and Occasion

As I mentioned last week, the Jane Scott Hodges' press party train made a stop in DC that I was able to attend. Although Jane Scott's book has been on my wishlist since I first heard about it, her actual visit prompted me to accelerate my purchase so I could have her sign it...and I'm SO glad I did.

This book is everything.

Not only is it a primer on monograms, linens, and associated etiquette but it's a legit design book that showcases some of the most iconic spaces that we all know and love that feature Leontine Linens' signature monograms. The above photos are the tiniest taste...you really have to see it for yourself. It's a party for your eyeballs.

And meeting Jane Scott was just a complete pleasure. As expected, she's warm and charming and looks every bit the part of successful business lady running a crazy talented creative shop. Here we are with Sally:

My baby bump is nudging the book right out of Jane Scott's hands.

And here's my little collection of loot post-event...my book, a darling bookmark and a delicious cookie that I ate about 30 seconds after I took this photo:

Moral of this story: Linens is probably my favorite design book for 2014 and I highly recommend you get a copy if you appreciate all things good and holy. Buy it here...

New Work from Sally Steponkus

The Leontine Linens event last week was lovely, I hope you went. I'll have some pictures tomorrow...but the major bonus for me was catching up with Sally.  And she informed me that there was some new work to enjoy on her website so I'm doing my public duty and reposting some of my favorites here for you:

All photos by Angie Seckinger

Sally's talent (in my opinion) is her ability to edit a space. She really lets architecture, subtle color, form, etc, do the work. You won't see a hodge-podge of tchotchkes in Sally's spaces. She's too tailored. And when you see her rooms they are so lovely and pleasing as everything quietly works together - falling into place to create a gorgeous room.

And though her work may be crisp and tailored, Sally is SUCH a personality. Not that those traits are mutually exclusive, but I think she's a breath of fresh air when you meet her. And when I see a space like the one below, I see Sally's twinkle coming through:

Check out more of Sally's - and her whole team's - work over at their website...

Friday Crush

A delightful vignette from Lucas/Eilers Design via Twitter from a home on Kiawah Island featuring Acanthus Stripe wallpaper from Celerie Kemble for Schumacher. Where would you begin here? I'm at a bit of a loss...the wallpaper is incredibly fantastic but can we talk about the patterned floor? And all of the rich wood tones? And of course the beautiful pottery that looks absolutely perfect here. I would be quite pleased if this was the entry of my lowcountry home.

Fall is in full swing and we might attempt a pumpkin patch this weekend. Hope you have a great one...see you next week!

Jane Scott Hodges, Leontine Linens, DC Neiman Marcus

There are so many important words to put in this post title, I had to go to a list format.

On the heels of Leontine Linens announcing their Christmas partnership with Neiman Marcus (yes, another retail + designer pairing! I love themes...) and the debut of founder Jane Scott Hodges' book Linens: For Every Room and Occassion...the Leontine Linens party press train will be in D.C. this Friday!

You can meet Jane Scott at the Neiman Marcus at Mazza Gallerie in Friendship Heights, get your book signed, and tell her how you would trade-in your first born for a monogrammed bedding set how much you love the brand.

But wait! There's more!

My friend and designer Sally Steponkus will be co-hosting the event along with boutique owner Sarah Cannova. If you've not met Sally, I think she's as worthy a personality to meet as I'm sure Jane Scott is...so what I'm saying is, this is going to be a good event.

Sally does right by Leontine in a lot of her work, including this recently done bedroom which she was nice to share with me...you saw it here first:

Stunning.

So friends, this is your PSA for the week. If you're local and have some free time Friday, head over to Neiman's in Friendship Heights from 10:30-12:30...lucky for me, said Neiman's is across the street from my office so I will definitely be popping in to meet Jane Scott and get my book signed!

See you there?
